Hello,
My name is Michael Grills. I'm a creative whose work spans a few industries, including (but not limited to) video games, publishing, advertising, SaaS and education.
I've run my career and life from a place of curiosity and introspection, which has given me many unique and awesome opportunities. I have always measured my success by two pillars.
Are the people I'm collaborating with smiling, and did I get to learn something new?
I like to help people, products, and businesses effectively communicate who they are and what they do.
Every project I take on, even my personal ones, comes from a brand-first perspective. To me, how we present ourselves is the first decision we get to control, and while some of you may struggle with how to do that authentically and with purpose, I take pride in helping guide the way.
I'm a bit of a disruptor, and my favourite question is “WHY”.
I'll challenge your assumptions about your audience, impact and reasons for your business decisions, and by working together, you'll find clarity.
I like to get my hands dirty. My favourite place to be is in the mix. I believe that clarity comes through the work, the experiments and the discussion. People are often surprised by how much “stuff” I produce. Tangibles, such as sketches, documents, storyboards, and prototypes, help you see future possibilities and demonstrate that they can be accomplished.
That's why I have a huge network of dedicated marketers, graphic designers, musicians, artists, video directors, event coordinators, and craftspeople that I can tap into. Taking the burden off of you and ensuring successful outcomes for everyone involved.
Not sure where you fit in or how we can work together? Many creatives require a brief. But that's for them - a way to cover their rear in case things go wrong. If you're not sure what the questions are, how can you possibly describe what you need? We will work on the brief together, find creative solutions, and help you accomplish your dreams without spending a ton of cash.
Because in the end, that's what creative services are supposed to be - Out-of-the-box thinking for problems related to your business that connect you to your customers.

Branding is Life
Strategic branding is a part of my DNA.
I can't help but look at a service, product or business and consider how their brand is or will be perceived.
Branding is culture, art, music, service -- It's life.
Check out Boss Fights and Balance Sheets. Where I share unbelievably well-thought out opinions on games, branding, design and more.
Painting
Since 2017, I've been practicing painting, exploring the little moments. This is my most personal work.
The dolls I paint represent all the masks we wear and allow you to participate in the scene the way you want, as an observer or as part of it.
There are themes related to the moral lessons of fairy tales, the magic of the superhero costume, the objectivity of the burlesque dancers, and the elegance of the human figure. I continue to pursue my curiosity about the different forms our characters take, be they heroes, villains, friends, or family.
I work with various media, including digital, paint, watercolour, and found materials.
